PROTON (short for Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd) is the first car manufacturer established on 7 May 1983 with a paid up capital of 150 million ringgit. Its establishment was the brainchild of Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, Prime Minister, to achieve the aspirations of the industrialized countries.

Proton vehicle manufacturers mainly from Mitsubishi Motors badge engineering between 1985 and the early 2000s. The company has produced a number of original design model and operates in at least 26 countries today, the majority of which are in Asia. Volkswagen once owned by Khazanah Nasional, the investment arm of the Malaysian government. In January 2012, it was taken over by DRB-Hicom, a Malaysian conglomerate in transactions amounting to RM1.2 billion.

Proton, largely depends on the domestic market, is undergoing structural changes and internal, as is evident in the appointment of a new owner, new partners, and a new chairman, and the launch of a new model in order to get the international presence and increase profits.
