History, 1956, 1965, 1967, 1996

UiTM noticeably fresh in mind with its establishment as Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM) in 1967. This institute is the result of a visionary leader of Malaysia, particularly former Prime Minister Second, the late Tun Abdul Razak. During his era as the 'Father of Development', one of the country's mission to focus on efforts to develop socio-economic status of the country's indigenous people. Allaryarham Tun Abdul Razak had laid the foundation stone of the campus on the land measuring 300 acres in size in Shah Alam on 14 October 1967. It is a vision to make ITM Allaryarham Tun as a catalyst to generate all available resources and produce as well as double the number of graduates indigenous trained and qualified not only in science and technology but also in other fields. Even now holds the status of a university, it is impossible to forget every second of the start of this institution. Sketch UiTM history starts in 1956 with the establishment of the British Institute.
The British Institute 1956 - 1965

The establishment of the British Institute was established following the outcome of the visit to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to development programs in the country in 1951. A visit to the working paper containing about RIDA establishment and its objectives to develop and improve the economic status of rural communities have been found. Ministry of Rural Development and Industry has two main centers under the auspices of RIDA Care Centre (Kuala Lumpur) and the British Institute (Petaling Jaya).

The British Institute began operations in November 1956 and inaugurated by the Minister of Trade and Industry on October 14, 1957. Some professional courses offered by international bodies such as the London Chamber of Commerce, Australian Chartered Secretaryship of Management has offered the British Institute. In 1964, the British Institute has held its first convocation and has seen a total of 50 graduates were awarded certificates by the Honourable Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Maktab MARA 1965 - 1967

The British Institute has been renamed MARA College in June 1965. According to the Honourable Tun Abdul Razak, the name change is intended to give new impetus and inspiration for the training center itself. The exchange also indicates that the college no longer under the jurisdiction of RIDA, instead became the most important unit of the MARA Training Division.

MARA, the name stands for Majlis Amanah Rakyat took over these institutions and strengthen the role and responsibility of RIDA. In 1966, when the British Institute of Management abolish exams offer long distance or "External Exam", MARA colleges began to run Diploma in Business Studies program of its own. The program has gained international recognition by Ealing Technical College of London who is also the external examiner.
