Department of Accountant General (AG) was created with the post of Accountant General of the Ministry of Finance before Malaysia gained independence. AG starting from a small office building located in Building Life Insurance Corporation of India at the junction of Jalan Pahang and Jalan Tun Perak (Mountbatten Road). The office then issued at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, Kuala Lumpur and subsequently operate in Block 8, Government Offices Complex, Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur. Now, AG operates in the Ministry of Finance Complex, Precinct 2, Putrajaya.

Over the past decade, the role and function of the AG has undergone several changes in line with the public sector.
