The proposal to establish this university was born in early 1982, when the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato 'Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, instructed the Ministry of Education to plan and set up an Islamic University in Malaysia. Once agreed by the cabinet, the IIUM was formally established on 10 May 1983. Its first president, Tun Hussein Onn was appointed on 16 September of the same year.

IIUM campus of 700 acres located in Gombak, Selangor. IIUM campus also has two branches in Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur. IIUM Foundation Centre is located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor and in Gambang, Pahang. IIUM has 13 Kulliyyah (faculty) and 12 centers of excellence.
